Life can be a whirlwind of noise and challenges, pulling us in different directions. It can be difficult to embrace the current moment when there is a deadline approaching, an event that requires extensive planning, or simply weekly tasks that can consume our day-to-day experience. Getting lost in the busyness of our days can increase anxiety, impact our relationships, and can actually cause us to not perform at our best level.
Mindfulness enables us to fully inhabit the present moment. It allows us to foster deep connections with those around us, and with ourselves. Practicing mindfulness allows us to be intentional with our time, and to slow down enough to properly care for our needs. This will allow us to decrease stress levels, and re-charge our emotional and physical batteries.
Let’s explore some simple mindfulness exercises that the whole family can enjoy:
1. Muscle Relaxation
Focus on specific areas of your body where you feel tension. This exercise helps relieve physical stress.
- Take a deep breath in.
- Squeeze the muscles in that area of tension as tightly as you can for 10 seconds.
- Release your muscles, exhale slowly, releasing the tension.
2. The STOP Technique
Use this technique to pause, observe, and check in with yourself.
- Stop: Pause whatever you’re doing.
- Take a breath: Breathe deeply and center yourself.
- Observe: Notice your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.
- Proceed: Make intentional choices based on your observations.
3. Nature Walk with Your 5 Senses
Step outside and engage your senses during a nature walk.
- Sight: Observe the colors around you. What catches your eye?
- Touch: Feel the ground beneath your feet. Is it soft or rough?
- Smell: Take in the scents—fresh grass, blooming flowers, or the ocean breeze.
- Hearing: Listen to the sounds—the rustling leaves, birdsong, or distant traffic.
- Taste: If you find something edible (like a wild berry), savor it.
Remember mindfulness isn’t about perfection—it’s about being present and kind to yourself. By practicing the great tool of mindfulness, we can enhance our overall well-being, increase our capacity to complete tasks, and build stronger relationships!
